In honor of St. Patrick’s Day we are doing corned beef and cabbage as our Farm Share this week. We are featuring our friends Mike Bowen and Julie Brown at North Hollow Farm. They specialize in 100% grass-fed beef. They have a herd of about 500 animals and farm about 1000 acres. In the town of Rochester, located in the central green mountains. They raise a cross breed of Angus, Hereford, and Red Devon cattle.
In 2003 they stopped growing corn for silage and decided to go to an all-grass program. We felt that for the good of the soil and for the animal and human health benefits it was the better direction to take. We couldn’t agree more! Grass-fed beef farming is one way to reduce soil erosion and phosphorous runoff which is a big problem in our back yard of Lake Champlain.
